La catarata Gullfosliteralmente significa 'Cascada Dorada' y es considerada por muchos como la catarata más hermosa de Islandia. Es la más conocida debido a que está cerca de Reikiavik y el nombre del Círculo Doradoproviene de esta catarata, ya que es una de las paradas durante el recorridojunto con Geysir yÞingvellir. Está localizada en la zona suroeste de Islandia y solo está a unas 2 horas conduciendo desde Reikiavik por la carretera número 35.

Glymur | La segunda catarata más alta de Islandia

La catarata Glymur, con 198 metros de altura,es la segunda más alta de Islandia. Durante muchos años, fue la cascada más alta del país y muchos locales todavía la consideran como tal. Sin embargo, en 2007 nació otra catarata de un glaciar que se estaba derritiendo, llamada Morsárfoss. Morsárfoss es todavía relativamente desconocida y es difícil de acceder, pero tiene una caída de 228 metros.

No obstante, Glymur está ubicada en el fiordo de Hvalfjörður, no muy lejos de Reikiavik. A pesar de ello, no es visible desde la ruta 1 y está a unas 2 horas caminando desde la ruta principal.

Hengifoss | La tercera catarata más alta de Islandia

Hengifoss tiene 128 metros de alto, convirtiendola en la tercera cascada más alta de Islandia. Se encuentra en el Este de Islandia, no muy lejos de la capital del este,Egilsstaðir. La catarata cae con fuerza entre los acantilados de lava negra, caracterizados por las franjas rojas horizontales de la roca. La caminata hasta la cascada es bastante fácil, aunque se tarda entre 40 y 60 minutos desde el aparcamiento. Durante el camino se puede observar otra catarata, Litlanesfoss, y las espectaculares columnas de basalto que la rodean.

La catarata Háifoss, con 122 metros de altura, es la cuarta más alta de Islandia. Está situada en el valleFossárdalur al sur de Islandia, en la zona interior del valleÞjórsárdalur. Es posible que necesites caminar un poco desde la carretera con el fin de llegar a ella - pero si lacarreterade grava se encuentra en buenas condiciones,podrás aparcar cerca.

Desde Reikiavik, tendrás que conducirdurante 2 horasa lo largo dela carretera nº1 y luegogirar a la izquierda hacia la carretera nº 30 una vez hayas pasadoSelfoss, y después girar a la derecha hacia la carretera nº 32. La catarata Dettifosses la más potente de Islandia cuando se trata de volumen de agua. Tiene solo 45 metros de altura, pero alrededor de 100 metros de extensión y una enorme cantidad de agua que cae cada segundo.
