Se ha dicho con anterioridad que, cuando se trata de agua, Islandia tiene abundanciaen todas las formas. Ya sea piscinas, manantiales termales, géisers, lagos, glaciares, ríos o cataratas, Islandia tiene montones.

Gullfoss | La catarata más popular de Islandia
La catarata Gullfosliteralmente significa 'Cascada Dorada' y es considerada por muchos como la catarata más hermosa de Islandia. Es la más conocida debido a que está cerca de Reikiavik y el nombre del Círculo Doradoproviene de esta catarata, ya que es una de las paradas durante el recorridojunto con Geysir yÞingvellir. Está localizada en la zona suroeste de Islandia y solo está a unas 2 horas conduciendo desde Reikiavik por la carretera número 35.

Glymur | La segunda catarata más alta de Islandia
La catarata Glymur, con 198 metros de altura,es la segunda más alta de Islandia. Durante muchos años, fue la cascada más alta del país y muchos locales todavía la consideran como tal. Sin embargo, en 2007 nació otra catarata de un glaciar que se estaba derritiendo, llamada Morsárfoss. Morsárfoss es todavía relativamente desconocida y es difícil de acceder, pero tiene una caída de 228 metros.
No obstante, Glymur está ubicada en el fiordo de Hvalfjörður, no muy lejos de Reikiavik. A pesar de ello, no es visible desde la ruta 1 y está a unas 2 horas caminando desde la ruta principal.
Hengifoss | La tercera catarata más alta de Islandia
Hengifoss tiene 128 metros de alto, convirtiendola en la tercera cascada más alta de Islandia. Se encuentra en el Este de Islandia, no muy lejos de la capital del este,Egilsstaðir. La catarata cae con fuerza entre los acantilados de lava negra, caracterizados por las franjas rojas horizontales de la roca. La caminata hasta la cascada es bastante fácil, aunque se tarda entre 40 y 60 minutos desde el aparcamiento. Durante el camino se puede observar otra catarata, Litlanesfoss, y las espectaculares columnas de basalto que la rodean.
Como extra, si miras en la otra dirección verás el lago Lagarfljót y el bosque más largo de Islandia,Hallormsstaðaskógur.
Haifoss | La cuarta catarata más alta de Islandia
La catarata Háifoss, con 122 metros de altura, es la cuarta más alta de Islandia. Está situada en el valleFossárdalur al sur de Islandia, en la zona interior del valleÞjórsárdalur. Es posible que necesites caminar un poco desde la carretera con el fin de llegar a ella - pero si lacarreterade grava se encuentra en buenas condiciones,podrás aparcar cerca.
Desde Reikiavik, tendrás que conducirdurante 2 horasa lo largo dela carretera nº1 y luegogirar a la izquierda hacia la carretera nº 30 una vez hayas pasadoSelfoss, y después girar a la derecha hacia la carretera nº 32. Desde la carretera nº 32 podrás conducir hacia la carretera de grava nº 332 por el camino hacia la cascada y el parque. Comprueba las condiciones de las vías con antelación si vas a conducir un coche pequeño, o si vas en un coche 4x4.

Dettifoss | La catarata más poderosa deEuropa
La catarata Dettifosses la más potente de Islandia cuando se trata de volumen de agua. Tiene solo 45 metros de altura, pero alrededor de 100 metros de extensión y una enorme cantidad de agua que cae cada segundo.
Esta catarata fueproyectada de forma prominenteen la escena inicial de Prometheus deRidley Scott. Dettifoss está en la zona nordeste de Islandia y puedes llegar a ella en un viaje de un día desde Akureyri o cerca aMývatn. Aquí podrás elegir entre algunasexcursiones a Dettifoss.

Seljalandsfoss | La catarata que puedes rodear
La catarata Seljalandsfossestá al sur de Islandia y es fácil acceder a ella desde todos los ángulos. Está justo al lado de la carretera principal y hay un camino pequeño que la rodea, el cual es apropiado para personas en cualquier nivel de estado físico. ¡Eshermosoe impresionante ver la catarata desde su parte posterior!
Puedes conducir hacia ella tú mismo, solo tienes que dirigirte hacia el Este por la carretera de circunvalación número 1 desde Reikiavik y después de un par de horas podrás verla. Alternativamente, puedes escoger entre muchostours ala Costa Sur.
Hraunfossar | Las cataratas delava
Las cataratas Hraunfossaresun sinónimo para muchas cataratas demanantiales que corren desde la lava deHallmundarhraun al oeste de Islandia. Combinadas, forman una de las cataratas más pintorescas de Islandia.
Hraunfossar está a menos de2 horas conduciendo desde Reikiavik; primero debes dirigirte hacia el norte en la carretera nº 1, pero debes girar a la derechasobre la carretera nº 50 justo antes de llegar a Borgarnes. La carretera nº 50 luego se convierte en la nº 518 y ésta te lleva todo el camino hacia estas cataratas.

La catarata Skógafosses unaprominente catarata en la carretera nº1 y marca el comienzo de lacaminata enFimmvörðuhálshaciaÞórsmörk.
Por encima deSkógafoss a lo largo de la ruta de senderismo, hay varias cataratas de todos los tamaños y formas durante algunos kilómetros, cada una incluso más hermosa que la anterior (creo que conté33 cataratas de camino aEyjafjallajökull la última vez que fui aFimmvörðuháls).
